SOCIAL TERM: Κοινωνική κινητικότητα / Social mobility
APPROVED DEFINITIONS FOR TERM: 4
TERM TYPE: Theoretical
DEFINITION (1): “In many societies individuals or groups can move from one level (stratum) to another in the stratification system, a process called social mobility. Social inequality has to do with differences in the distribution of benefits and burdens; social stratification is a structured system of inequality; and social mobility refers to the shift of individuals or groups from one social status to another. […] Social mobility can take a number of forms. For example, mobility may be vertical or horizontal. Vertical mobility involves movement from one social status to another of higher or lower rank. […] Horizontal mobility entails movement from one social status to another of approximately equivalent rank. Mobility also may be intergenerational or intragenerational. Intergenerational mobility involves a comparison of the social status of parents and their children at some point in their respective careers (e.g., as assessed by the rankings of their occupations at roughly the same age). Research shows that a large minority, perhaps even a majority, of the U.S. population moves up or down at least a little in the class hierarchy in every generation. Intragenerational mobility entails a comparison of the social status of a person over an extended time. There are limits to the variety of most people’s mobility experience. Small moves tend to be the rule, and large moves the exception.” (Hughes and Kroehler 2009: 195-196).
