DEFINITION (1): «A concept that simply refers to a theory of being. Usually contrasted with epistemology as a theory of knowledge. An ontological view of the state, for example, poses the question: does the state actually exist? Being needs to be kept separate from knowledge, since we cannot speak of ideas as a reﬂection of the material world, if we confuse them. A materalist would argue that ideas are ontologically part of matter since they are the product of a brain, itself a material organ. Epistemologically, however, ideas can be judged true or false depending upon how accurately they reflect the material world» (Hoffman, 2007, p.132).
