DEFINITION (1): «A theory that postulates the (abstract) freedom and equality of all individuals. Essentially a modern outlook, liberalism in its classical form presented individuals as living outside both state and society. However, even when liberals came to accept that individuals have always lived in a society, they continue to operate with a notion of the individual that abstracts him or her (it is usually a him) from social relationships. It is this mystiﬁcation that accounts for the tension between the freedom and equality preached in theory, and historical support for slavery, patriarchy, colonialism and the political power of the middle classes. Liberals see the market as natural and the desire to appropriate private property is linked to human nature. Because the notion of private property is necessarily exclusive, liberals accept the need for the state to defend property against those who would ‘interfere’ with it» (Hoffman, 2007.p.96).

DEFINITION (1): Another definition of bourgeoisie is generally those who live in the municipality, meaning those people that live in the city, the bourgeois, as opposed to those who live in rural areas. In that sense, bourgeoisie began to develop in Europe since the 11th century and particularly during the renaissance of the 12th century, with the first development of rural output and urbanization (Kuper, 1965).

DEFINITION (1): «A concept that is more than economic. Markets can exist in every sphere of society where there is scarcity. It could be argued that wherever they exist, they conceal differences in power and status. Obviously markets relate to the exchange of goods and services, but it has become very fashionable under the inﬂuence of the New Right to introduce markets into education and health care in liberal societies. Markets spring up in response to a perceived scarcity, and attempts to suppress the market cannot succeed where goods and service cannot be provided by other institutions in society. The East European experience under communist party rule has conﬁrmed that where need cannot be met in other ways, people will form a market, however informally or illegally. The presence of the market becomes central in liberal societies and was seen by classical liberals as an autonomous mechanism that is separate from the state, and even from society. This view is now discredited. The problem with the market, it could be argued, is that it masks real differences, so that individuals or groups engaged in exchanges are abstractly equated. The idea that the market is rooted in human nature is ahistorical and implausible, but it is true that markets have been around for thousands of years» (Hoffman, 2007,p.109).
