DEFINITION (1): “Folkways have to do with the customary ways and ordinary conventions by which we carry out our daily activities. We bathe, brush our teeth, groom our hair, wear shoes or sandals, wave to friends, mow lawns, and sleep in beds. We view people who violate folkways, especially those who violate a good number of them, as somehow “different” and even “strange.” Ordinarily, however, we do not attach moral significance to folkways. For example, we may regard people who wear soiled clothing as crude but not as sinful, and people who are late for appointments as thoughtless but not evil. Gossip and ridicule are important mechanisms for enforcing folkways.” (Hughes and Kroehler 2009: 44).

DEFINITION (1): «Gregory Bateson first used the concept of the frame in 1954 in an essay about epistemology and animal behavior. Today scholars use the term in several areas of social inquiry, including linguistics, social psychology, media studies, and policy studies, and it is also used by sociologists and political scientists who study social movements. A frame is an “interpretative schema that simplifies and condenses the ‘world out there’ by selectively punctuating and encoding objects, situations, events, experiences, and sequences of action” (Snow and Benford. 1988. “Ideology, Frame Resonance, and Participant Mobilization”. International Social Movement Research 1: 197-218, pp. 197), thus organizing experience and guiding action by “rendering events or occurrences meaningful” (Snow et. al. 1986 “Frame Alignment Processes, Micromobilization, and Movement Participation”. American sociological Review 51: 464-481, pp. 464). Erving Goffman first imported the concept into sociology in order to help explain the microsociology of everyday interactions and communicative acts. Social movement scholars were drawn to the concept because of its potential to provide insight into the various forms of interpretation that are part of the dynamics of social movements.» (Noakes and Johnston 2005: 3).
