DEFINITION (1): We define culture as “shared mental worlds and their embodiments” (Jasper 1997: 12). Culture is not a realm of social life separate from the economy and state, but the symbolic or meaningful dimension of people, things, and actions. It undergirds economic, political, and other practices. It is subjective but cannot easily be ignored. It is shared, but also imposed by some people on others. It constrains people but it also changes – sometimes rapidly.

It includes both nonmaterial culture -abstract creations like values, beliefs, symbols, norms, customs, and institutional arrangements -and material culture- physical artifacts or objects […] Very simply, culture has to do with the customs of a people, and society has to do with the people who are practicing the customs. Culture provides the meanings that enable human beings to interpret their experiences and guide their actions, whereas society represents the networks of social relations that arise among a people.” (Hughes and Kroehler 2009: 41-42).
