The methodology of fixed design research was originally developed under the rule of positivism, while the flexible design research is in stark contrast to it. The methodology of fixed design research was established as a process of justification of specific research hypotheses, while the second as a process of discovering new theories and new empirical descriptions. The two methodologies not only differed from each other, but also targeted at different phenomena. The success of each in describing the phenomena it examined did not allow either of them to fully dominate. The decline of positivism created the conditions for a revision and for a greater convergence of the two methodologies. At the same time, the adoption of a new methodological model, called biphasic, which presupposes the development of research infrastructure, also contributed to the further convergence of the two methodologies.
