SOCIAL TERM: Φυλή / Tribe
APPROVED DEFINITIONS FOR TERM: 1
TERM TYPE: Theoretical
DEFINITION (1): The accepted usage of “tribe” is as a political unit larger than a clan and smaller than a nation or people, especially when indigenous populations themselves use the term (Barnard, Spencer, 2002,p. 934).
DEFINITION TYPE: Nominal
DEFINITION WRITER: Deligiannidou Maria
DEFINITION COMMENTS: The terms “tribe”... and “tribal” (from Latin tribus) have a variety of meanings, some of which are taboo in modern anthropology. The use of “tribal” to refer to aspects of culture other than politics is generally discouraged in contemporary anthropology, although current fashions for green primitivism have given the term a new lease of politically acceptable life in Euro-American youth culture (Barnard &Spencer 2002: 934). -Barnard A. & Spencer J.. 1996. Encyclopedia of social and cultural anthropology, Reprint 2002. London & New York: Routledge, σ. 934
