SOCIAL TERM: Εξελικτισμός / Evolutionism
APPROVED DEFINITIONS FOR TERM: 1
TERM TYPE: Theoretical
DEFINITION (1): Evolutionism is the scholarly activity of describing, understanding and explaining the process of qualitative change (Claessen,1996, p.325).
DEFINITION TYPE: Nominal
DEFINITION WRITER: Deligiannidou Maria
DEFINITION COMMENTS: In Darwin's view,... the most important principle governing evolution was natural selection: the survival of the better-adapted species. The process of natural selection was accidental: variations were generated at random, and one of them would prove to be most adaptive. In this way new species formed; the process had no specific direction. According to Spencer, however, the evolutionary process had a clear direction: it tended towards growing complexity. He pointed to the great variety in societal forms, and to the substantial differences between, on the one hand, urbanized, industrialized societies, and simple, primitive peoples on the other (Claessen 1996: 325). -Claessen H.J.M., 1996. “Evolution and evolutionism” in Barnard A. & Spencer J., 1996. Encyclopedia of social and cultural anthropology, Reprint 2002. London & New York: Routledge, σ. 325.
