DEFINITION (1): A business cycle consists of expansions that occur almost simultaneously in multiple economic activities, followed by similarly general recessions, contractions, and ups and downs that merge into the expansion phase of the next cycle. This sequence is repetitive but not periodic: over time the turnovers vary from one year and up to ten or twelve years. They can not be divided into smaller circles of a similar nature with a range close to their own (Burns and Mitchell, 1946).

DEFINITION (3): Literature defines two main types of business cycle: the classical and the growth(or deviation) cycle. The growth cycle defines alternating periods of expan-sion and contraction in macroeconomic activity with respect to deviations ofthe GDP growth rate from an appropriately defined trend rate of growth. Theclassical cycle, instead, identifies turning points on the basis of an absolutefall – or rise – in the value of GDP (Altavilla, 2004).
