DEFINITION (1): «Empiricism is a philosophical position that seeks to conﬁne study to the facts. Formulated historically by Hume, empiricism identiﬁes normative or ethical propositions as metaphysical or imaginary in character. Empiricists believe that factual statements are free from values, and that general principles are useful to have but they can never be proven. Empiricism has been hugely inﬂuential, particularly in the English-speaking world. It was linked particularly in the 1950s and 1990s with a notion that the study of politics could only be ‘scientiﬁc’ if it stuck to the facts and saw ethical propositions as purely personal and private protestations of faith. Empiricism, its critics argue, rests upon an untenable dualism between facts and values, theory and practice, and ignores the way in which facts are inherently evaluative since they are related to one another, and it is this relationship that furnishes the evaluative implications. Thus, the proposition that fewer and fewer people vote in a liberal democracy because they are satisﬁed with politicians may be presented as a purely factual statement (and indeed, was so presented by political scientists in the 1950s and 1960s), but it has obvious normative implications» (Hoffman, 2007,p.49).

DEFINITION (1): «A political concept that implies that people with similar attributes need to be treated in the same way. The pre-liberal tradition defended equality in a way that excluded most of the population. Citizens were equal, but divided naturally from slaves or serfs. The liberal tradition extends equality to all human beings, but this equality, it could be argued, is abstract and ignores the differences between people. To meet this argument, equality needs to be deﬁned in a way that makes it compatible with difference so that to treat people equally, is to acknowledge and respect their difference. In what respects therefore are people equal? They are all human and all have the capacity to develop. Equality is a concept that recognises this and it must have consequences for the distribution of resources. Inequality of a radical kind prevents people from ‘changing places’, and therefore is a cause of force and frustration. Equality is a momentum concept since it is unimaginable that a ‘truly equal’ society can be realised. What we can and should do is to make our society more equal, and extend the notion from humans to the wider world of nature, where we need to recognise commonalities as well as difference» (Hoffman, 2007,pp.50-51).
