DEFINITION (1): «The philosophical basis of Marxist theory. There is controversy as to whether dialectical materialism was created by Engels or Lenin rather than Marx. Although it was later to be presented very schematically, the theory itself underpins Marx’s analysis of society, history and the world itself. Dialectics can be taken to refer to the fluidity of all things – their movement and change – and it is a concept that locates this change within things. A dialectical view of capitalism points to the fact that capitalism grew out of an earlier system and must itself change. This change is seen as ‘eternal’, in other words something that must always occur. (…). Materialism is a theory that postulates that the material world exists independently of consciousness. It is a theory of knowledge – valid ideas are those that reflect this independent reality accurately – as well as a theory of being or ontology. The brain is ‘matter that thinks’ so that even the most fantastic ideas are produced by people thinking in the real world. Even prejudiced ideas (like racism, for example) arise as reflections of material reality, even though these reflections are superficial and one-sided» (Hoffman, 2007,p.42).
